How to clean your mattress: 8 quick tips

You might wish you could just pop your mattress in the washing machine – but of course, that is not an option. Luckily, with these 8 tips, you can clean your mattress like a pro. Let’s go!

  1. Wash the mattress cover | Some mattresses come with a removable cover. This can be washed at 40 or 60 degrees in your washing machine. All Cloudpillo mattresses have one. Just unzip it, wash according to the label, and let it air dry. Tip: flip and rotate the mattress while the cover is off. This helps it wear evenly and prevents dips.
  2. Vacuum your mattress | Use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush to remove dust, skin flakes and other particles. Make sure to get all the corners and both sides.
  3. Steam clean | Got a steam cleaner? Great! Vacuum first, then slowly move the steamer about 15 to 20 cm above the mattress to avoid soaking it. Let it dry fully before use to prevent mould.
  4. Remove stains | Spot a stain? Tackle it quickly. The longer it sets, the harder it is to clean. If it’s already dried in, don’t worry – more stain tips are further down this blog.
  5. Baking soda or detergent | Sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda or washing powder. Leave for a few hours, then vacuum. This neutralises odours and works on sofas and carpets too.
  6. White vinegar | Mix equal parts vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Lightly mist the mattress (do not soak it), leave for a few hours, then blot with a dry cloth. It helps with smells, stains and bacteria – even mites and mould.
  7. Mild fabric cleaner | Use a fabric-specific cleaner, but always test it first. If safe, use a damp cloth to apply and another to remove it.
  8. Professional dry cleaning | Nothing works? Take your mattress to a pro. They have tools for a deep clean when all else fails.

How to remove stains from your mattress

Here are our golden stain removal tips:

Blood stains
Act fast. Dab with a cloth soaked in cold water. Still there? Mix 1 part hydrogen peroxide (3%) with 2 parts water and apply. Let sit, then blot dry. You can also use salt and cold water for old stains – let it sit and wipe away gently.

Urine stains
Dab with cold water. Spray a mix of 1 part vinegar and 2 parts water. Let sit, blot dry, then cover with baking soda. Leave 15 minutes, then vacuum.

Sweat stains
Sweating is normal, but it can stain. Sprinkle baking soda, let sit for 15 minutes, then vacuum. Use a mild soap and water to blot any remaining marks and dry with a cloth.

Makeup stains
Use a mix of mild dish soap and warm water. Dab with a clean cloth and blot dry. Baby wipes also work for greasy makeup.

Coffee stains
Blot with warm water and a few drops of dish soap. Or spray with a mix of vinegar and water. Still there? Try baking soda – sprinkle, leave, vacuum and repeat if needed.
