Choosing a pillow is easier when you know what to compare. These seven factors can help you narrow down the options based on your sleeping position, preferred feel and practical needs.
What should you consider when buying a pillow?
#1 | Your sleeping position
Your sleeping position is a useful starting point because it influences how much pillow height may feel comfortable.
Side sleepers: often prefer more height to fill the space between the head and mattress.
Back sleepers: often prefer a medium height that supports the head without pushing it too far forward.
Stomach sleepers: often prefer a lower, softer pillow so the head is not lifted too high.

#2 | Firmness and filling
Do you prefer a soft, mouldable pillow or a firmer feel? The filling and construction have a major influence on firmness, resilience and how adjustable the pillow is. Down and fibre fillings often feel softer, while memory foam and latex can offer a more stable feel. Adjustable loose-fill pillows let you change the amount of filling yourself.
#3 | Size, shape and height
The ideal height is personal and depends on your body shape, mattress and sleeping position. An adjustable pillow can be useful because you can remove or add filling rather than being locked into one fixed height.
- Cloudpillo Original – adjustable memory-foam filling so you can fine-tune height and firmness.
- Cloudpillo Plus – adjustable filling plus a shoulder cut-out.
- Cloudpillo Recharge – one compartment filled with no-waste memory foam; remove filling to adjust the height and firmness.
#4 | Breathability and temperature feel
If you tend to sleep warm, look at the cover material, ventilation and overall construction. Different materials can change how warm or cool a pillow feels, but no pillow can control room temperature. Check the specifications of the model you are considering.
#5 | Allergy-friendly materials and cleaning
If allergies or sensitive skin are a concern, pay attention to the materials and whether the cover can be removed and washed. Regularly washing removable covers according to the care instructions can help keep your sleep environment cleaner.
#6 | Care and lifespan
Before buying, check how the pillow should be cleaned, which parts are washable and whether replacement covers are available. There is no single lifespan for every pillow: material, use and care all matter. Replace it when it has permanently lost its shape or no longer gives you the comfort you want.
#7 | Value for money
Price alone does not tell you whether a pillow is right for you. Compare adjustability, materials, care, warranty and trial conditions alongside the price. A pillow that can be fine-tuned to your preference may be more useful than choosing purely by firmness label.
