From what age can children sleep under a duvet?

It is an important milestone for your little one: sleeping under a real duvet! 🧸 But from what age are children allowed to sleep under a duvet? And how do you make sure they sleep comfortably and safely? In this article we dive into the world of duvets for children. Read along.

From what age is a duvet suitable?

Children from age 2 may sleep under a duvet. At that age they have almost or completely outgrown their sleeping bag and it is time for a children’s duvet. Hooray. Your child may also be ready for a bigger bed. This is often an exciting moment for both you and your child. Take enough time to practise and get used to it. Remember that development is different for every child, so do not focus only on age. Look closely at behaviour, physical development, and needs. These are signs that your child is ready for a duvet:

  • Your child can cover themselves | Can your son or daughter cover themselves with a blanket and get out from under it on their own? Then your child has the motor skills to handle a duvet safely.

  • Your child has outgrown the sleeping bag | At around two years old many children outgrow their sleeping bag. You notice they no longer sleep comfortably and move a lot during sleep. Time for a duvet.

  • Your child is ready for a bigger bed | The move to a duvet often goes hand in hand with the switch to a bigger bed. If your child already sleeps in a big bed or that change is coming, it makes sense to switch to a duvet as well.

Why no duvet under 2 years?

If your child is not yet 2 years old, they may not sleep under a duvet. Why not? It is about safety and health:

1. Risk of suffocation

Babies and young children up to age 2 can suffocate if the duvet falls over the face. They cannot yet move themselves or the duvet well. Be very careful.

2. Overheating

Of course you want your child to be warm, but watch out for overheating. Young children can get too warm quickly. Do not use thick or heavy blankets and duvets.

3. Limited freedom of movement

A duvet can bunch up in the bed or get twisted. Your child then has less freedom of movement. Choose a sleeping bag until age 2. It stays in place and helps prevent suffocation and overheating.

What is the best children’s duvet for your toddler?

Looking for the best duvet for your toddler? Pay attention to these features:

Lightweight: a toddler duvet should be light and breathable to help prevent suffocation and overheating.

The right size: it sounds obvious, but the duvet must match the bed size. Common sizes for a children’s duvet are:

  • 100 x 135 cm toddler bed

  • 120 x 150 cm toddler bed

  • 140 x 200 cm single bed

Four season duvet: choose a duvet that works in every season. A four season duvet offers comfort in both summer and winter.

Anti allergy duvet: a toddler duvet should be hypoallergenic, especially if your child is sensitive to dust mites or allergies.

Washable: pick a duvet that is easy to wash. Accidents and stains are inevitable with young children.

Want to tick all of the above boxes at once ✔️ Then choose a Cloudpillo duvet for your child. Our duvets are lightweight and very breathable, so your child will not get too warm and will sleep comfortably all year round. They are also anti allergenic, which is helpful if your child is sensitive to dust mites or other allergens. Finally, they are four season duvets, so you only need one children’s duvet. A Cloudpillo duvet is a durable choice and friendly for your wallet.

5 tips for moving from sleeping bag to duvet

It can feel a little exciting to switch from a sleeping bag to a real duvet. With these tips you will get through this phase just fine. You have got this.

1. Start by practising during naps | Let your child sleep under the duvet during nap time first. That is less of a change than a full night and helps them get used to it.

2. Make it familiar | Let your child help choose a duvet cover. Dinosaurs, princesses, astronauts, unicorns, anything goes as long as it makes them excited.

3. Combine it with a bigger bed | Is your child moving to a bigger bed? Use that moment to introduce the new duvet too.

4. Give your child time to adjust | It can take a while to get used to a duvet. If falling asleep is hard, consider a light sleeping bag with a small blanket for a short period.

5. Explain everything clearly | Take time to show how you tuck in the duvet and how your child can cover themselves. It gives a nice sense of independence.
